About Low Row and Feetham Literary Institute

 The Institute: A Short History

Nestled in the heart of Swaledale, the Low Row & Feetham Literary Institute has been a cornerstone of village life since 1904. Originally founded to bring books, newspapers and the world of ideas to our rural community, the Institute was built with the belief that learning and connection are vital to a thriving society no matter how remote.

Preserving Village Heritage

More than a century on, the Institute remains a proud symbol of our community’s values - resilience, resourcefulness, and a desire to learn. We are committed to preserving the historic fabric of the building while keeping its original spirit alive: .....a place and space built for anyone to access on an equal footing, to enjoy shared opportunities. Though the world has changed, the purpose endures — to be a hub where people come together to enrich local life.

Community Engagement

While access to information is no longer the barrier it once was, enabling meaningful engagement and companionship within our community is as important as ever.  Today, the Institute is a space for everyone — a place to gather, share skills, knowledge and stories,, celebrate creativity, and support one another. From events and workshops to quiet moments and joyful gatherings, the Institute continues to bring people together in a space that truly belongs to the community.
